Matthew budd - Web Development

There's nothing to be afraid of

what am I doing now

who have I been eating

As some of you probably know, lots of good things have been going on lately. I recently accepted a great offer from a highly professional, honest and talented Web design company where I am doing some of my best work to date. I’ve been there for a few months now and it’s revitalised my passion for Front End development done properly.

I’ve also decided to move my hosting over to Media temple, which if you’re reading this, I am now on. Lots of other stuff is going on, some of which I could spend a lifetime writing about. The good will out!

Above is a small Portfolio of sites I have built (not always fully designed, I can't take credit for that on some of these) and am proud to be associated with. They should all be fully standards compliant and massively accessible if I've done my job properly. You can also see what I'm up to at work on the upstream webcam stream below it. You won't always see me there but if you do why not say hi.

What exactly is Web Design?

Web Design is no longer a term that just means making things look pretty. Your average Web Designer these days has to offer many many skills in order to stay working and therefore most technical people involved in building websites will tend to be known as a Web Developer.

There are some topics in the Weblog that go on about specific areas of Web Developent although these days I try to Blog about other things to show that I do in fact also have a life outside of Web Development. Contact Me to find out more about Web Design and Development.

What is involved in building a Website?

There are an ever-growing array of technologies that are involved in building modern Web sites, these range from initial design using Photoshop or Illustrator together with good old fashioned creativity and professional quality markup using XHTML pages with the help of CSS. More use of Javascript, more specifically Javascript 2 (a term that is coined from Web 2.0) to give content a more engaging experience without losing any content for Search engines to look for. The tools I use everyday as a Web Developer usually consist of the following:

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3
  • Adobe Dreamweaver CS3
  • Adobe CS3 Flash Professional
  • Javascript Libraries such as jQuery
  • XAMPP (when developing sites)
  • Firefox (I am a Firefox convert!)
  • Internet Explorer, Safari (For testing)
  • Thunderbird (for email)
  • Zend Framework
  • Cakephp
  • Smarty
